Connections are usually better for the Southease trains than the Glynde ones. This is an energetic walk (550 metres or 1,600 feet of ascent) over three distinct downland ridges, with magnificent views throughout. You will next be walking in a field, with a gorgeous view to the left. It has the advantage that you get the long Lewes to Southease section out of the way first, and this provides a decent length section before you get to lunch at the Abergavenny Arms in Rodmell.

I no longer had to rush and could really take in the sights again. From here the path heads south over Balmer Down to the A27, crossing the road then round past Kingston near Lewes and on to the beautiful village of Southease, crossing the river Ouse to the station. There is no path for the first few yards, after which you can feed into and follow a path that curves left on a descending terrace in a wide arc round the side of a downland combe. The level green meadows stretch away west, and to the east rise the South Downs. This is also the start of the new(ish) Egret's Way - a shared use path that will take you all the way to Newhaven). There has been a village here since at least the time of William the Conqueror. Just a little reminder in case you had forgot where you are. I mention this because the second half of the walk, from this point, was my favourite part. Pass through a car park next to Lewes Golf Clubhouse and follow the access drive down into Lewes. The Railway Land is one of my favourite places in Lewes - it offers so much for a relatively small space and is full of wildlife and history. This walk is one of my absolute favourites. Maybe they were mating. The sun was now hanging low in the sky, giving a sort of warm pink tinge to my surroundings. It is four miles south of Lewes and a similar distance north of the port of Newhaven, home of the Dieppe ferry. This is a very popular area for hiking and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.
